NKT has signed a contract with Energinet to deliver a high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cable system connecting Bornholm Energy Island to the power grid on Zealand. The agreement covers design, manufacturing and installation of a 525 kV HVDC system, including 200 km of offshore cable and 16.8 km onshore.
Bornholm Energy Island, located in the Baltic Sea, is planned to receive up to 3.8 GW of offshore wind power and transmit it to Denmark and Germany through two HVDC interconnectors. With the Danish link awarded to NKT, the company is now responsible for connections to both countries. NKT previously secured the German connection contract from transmission system operator 50Hertz in 2023.
The cables will be manufactured at NKT’s Karlskrona plant in Sweden and the contract value is about € 650 million.. Offshore installation is scheduled to use NKT’s new vessel NKT Eleonora, expected to be operational in 2027.
